Trend Forecasting for 2022

Last year I predicted the some of the biggest trends we were going to see in 2021, and I have to say I wasn’t that far off. This past year we saw trends that were all over the place, from y2k to the “it girl” trends, which were heavily influenced through social platforms such as TikTok. In fact, for my generation, almost all trends began or rose to popularity through TikTok, as the micro-trends played a large role in our wardrobes. In 2022, we expect that to change a little bit.

As we know, in fashion, what goes round comes around, and that is what we are seeing again this year. Last year, y2K was all the rage, but I predict in 2022 it will be the 70’s. Trends from this era such as large sunglasses and fringe are emerging back into our lives, and are just brining the whole decade along with them. Other areas of fashion where we are getting out inspiration from is 2000’s runway shows, prep reinvented and moto-inspired outerwear. From these areas, there are many trends that I see rising to popularity throughout the next twelve months.

*** I do not have much education on this subject, just a high interest. There is never a need to follow trends, always wear what you feel comfortable and confident in (:

Deconstructed Prep

Starting off strong, the prep style is back, but reinvented. When the SS22 shows were first released in Milan, deconstructed prep was one of the large styles that caught my eye. Brands such as Prada and Miu Miu displayed a fabulous execution of this, and has now set the tone for the upcoming warmer months. Some brands to look out for are Danielle Guizio, Djerf Avenue, Sporty & Rich, Orseund Iris, and more. You can also find some great finds for this style through thrifting for more affordable options.

High Fashion SS 2000 Looks

If you were to go look at any runway show from the 2000’s you will see pieces that are all over the internet, and I predict them to stick around for the spring and summer this year. There are certain trends from this era that are going to dominate our wardrobes, and I have listed some of them below when I talk about certain items that I believe will be popular in 2022. Low rise pants, hair clips, bra tops, big bags; you name it. And while this is still technically y2K, this is different than the y2K that we saw in 2021. This is slightly more matured, as inspiration will be drawn from designer shows versus Polly Pockets. Brands that will have plenty of these pieces include Miaou, With Jean, Realisation Par, By Far, Stand, and more.

70’s Inspiration

Another trend, another decade. As we move into the new year the emergence of the 70’s has been prevalent in many new collections released by designers. Where a lot of this 70’s look is coming from is through accessories and shoes. Shoes such as clogs we will see more and more of, and we have already started to see that this winter with the Birkenstock Boston clog. As for accessories, I cannot go on social media without seeing 70’s sunglasses. And for the influence of 70’s fashion, the boldness of colors worn will make a comeback these upcoming seasons, and a way for me to step out of my comfort zone. Brands to shop at that are heavily influenced by 70’s fashion include Simon Miller, Lexxola, Y/Project, Victoria Beckham, and more.

Moto-Chic

From the fashion week shows in Milan and France, we have seen leather making a large resurgence on the runway. While yes, leather pants were all the rage this year, leather is bring worn in more traditional “Kate Moss” ways. Prada displayed a classic way to wear leather, and Balenciaga has taken a more artistic spin on the upcoming trend. Last year, Von Dutch was super popular among teens and young adults, but this year I see it to be replaced by Harley Davidson. Oh and as for your traditional leather jackets? Don’t get rid of those just yet, you’ll be subbing that for your leather blazer.

I believe most of our fashion will be influenced by the categories above. BUT, there are certain items that will define fashion for 2022. Here is what I see…

Ballet Flats

While technically ballet flats have never really been out of style, I see them rising to popularity again this year among all people. From age 6 to 86, these will be a wardrobe staple to go along with that preppy look that seems to be back. Get these ballet flats here:

Micro Skirts

As a tall person, this trend hurts a little. But these look so stylist on, and are so flattering with a matching top. You can find these here:

Low Rise Pants

I know this is not what everyone wants to see, but this is the future of jeans, trousers, and cargos everywhere.

Big Bags

Finally, a bag that can hold my giant phone! And a water bottle, and a lip gloss, and sunglasses, and wallet, and so on.

Designer Collabs

The largest designer collar that took off this year was the Fendi x Skims collab, and this seemed to set a spark off in the designer industry.

Socks With Sandals

As seen on the ultimate unintentional fashion influencer Emma Chamberlin, socks and sandals will be making a comeback in more than just a casual way.

Tube Tops

No, not just corsets. And no, not too many scarf tops. Tube tops. But please, let’s wear them better than we did in 2017.

11 Clothing & Beauty Winter Essentials

Despite growing up in the south, I have learned a thing or two about the winter. I have lived in the midwest for five years, and am in the beginning of my first Chicago winter. These things are NO JOKE! The negative wind chills really aren’t my thing, but I know some essentials that help make the cold days even a little bit better. While yes, coats and hats are needed to bear the cold months, there are other items that make them just a little bit better (:

Beanies

Let’s start out simple with beanies – everyone always has them, everyone always needs more. Now that I walk everywhere, I almost always wear a beanie as I walk out the door – so my collection is growing. This season, The Ganni beanies are all the rage. BUT, they are pricey sitting at just under $100.

Luckily, I have found them for $68 on SSENSE.

Blanket Scarves

Again, starting out with the basics. But surprisingly, I didn’t have a solid scarf until I moved to Chicago. And now that I have one – the addiction begins. Acne Studios scarves have been the star of every fall and winter for the past few seasons, and they have not gone anywhere. The colorful blanket scarf is essential to your winter wardrobe. I went into Madewell to buy one and the employee there said it best – “If a scarf isn’t swallowing my face, then I don’t want it”.

If the beloved Acne Studios scarf is out of reach but you love the look of it, try these affordable options from Madewell, Forever 21 and Saks Off 5th.

Weather Proof Boots

Okay, yes, Uggs are back in. And I love that. I have worn my Uggs non stop, but once we got our first big snow my boots were basically destroyed and had to dry for days. SO, I resorted to my 2017 Sorel’s that definitely need an upgrade. Having a cute weatherproof shoe is key to getting through the months of January through April.

Some boots that I have had my eye on are there Sherpa Sorel’s, and the 90’s cult favorite Moon Boot.

Quality Skincare

As I have began to make my own money you pick and choose where you prioritize your extra spending money, and I have found mine to be skincare. Buying quality skincare that works for you is worth every penny – especially in the winter. My skin dries and breaks out out horribly as soon as it hits below 30 degrees, and the fix to this for me has been Sunday Riley. While I use Sunday Riley in other forms of skincare such as acne treatment, anti-aging, etc., some of their products have saved my skin from completely drying out. The two products that help my skin the most in the winter the Juno face oil and Tidal water cream.

Vest

I talked about the comeback of the vest in my 2021 Trend Forecasting article and I was (decently) spot on. Puffer was huge again this winter, including puffer vest. Aside from a puffer, any oversized vest is the perfect combo between style and warmth. This vest from Storets has been seen everywhere, and is on sale in multiple colors.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses in the winter sounds weird, but are much needed when the sun reflects off of a fresh layer of snow. And, what is better than a new pair of sunglasses? These are Devon Windsor from Revolve, and remind me of a lot of top designer sunglasses from Bottega, Dior and Celine.

Other sunglasses on my list are the Rayban Burbank, and the Rayban Julie.

Skin Tight Layers

Layering is everything in the winter, and at the base of every good layering is a skin tight turtleneck. I have this shirt from Aritzia in three colors, and wear this on its own or under crewnecks.

Another skin tight layer that I love is again, from Aritzia, and is the TNA Cropped Ribbed Long Sleeve.

Big Bags

The micro bag trend is cute, but definitely not practical in the winer. For Christmas I got a larger bag that carrier more than my debit card and lip balm, and it has been a game changer. Especially when wearing a large coat, these small bags don’t cut it. I have loved the Puffin Bag from Simon Miller, and for winter the black sterling puffin is unreal.

Other larger bags that I love are the By Far Amber Bag, Stand Studio Lola Tote, and vintage designer totes.

Lip Balm

I am sure you have seen this lip mask all over TikTok, but it truly has kept my ultra dry lips in check through the past few months. I apply this mask in the morning and at night, and sometimes put it on with a lip liner before I run out the door to go to a dinner or drinks.

If you want a more on-the-go lip balm that is just as shiny and nourishing, try the Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm.

The Super Puff

Yes, not just any winter coat. THE Super Puff from Aritzia. If you know me at all you know that there is nothing more that I love than this jacket. They are such good quality for the price that they are, which is why I have continued to purchase multiple. Save yourself the time and order one online now.

Hydrating Body Wash

You know the feeling when you get out of the shower and IMMEDIATELY need to put on lotion? The worst. This body wash is my favorite because it is so hydrating, and the ingredients are clean which is perfect for sensitive skin. Pair this with the Necessaire exfoliator and body lotion afterwards and your winter skin will be unmatched.

January 2022 Mood Board

I’ve never made one of these before, but I saw someone make a mood board and use it as their laptop background which I think is a great idea. My mood board consists of photos and other forms of digital media that inspire me and where I want to put my focus on in January 2022.

I made this mood board on The Landing, and will continue to make one a month through the rest of 2022. If you want to see the rest of follow me on The Landing or subscribe to my website (:

New Year, Same Me, More Mindful Habits

“New year, new me!” is one of the most discouraging sentences, and quite honestly disappoints me for the upcoming year. This one single sentence puts so much pressure on a person to change – maybe I am just feeling this pressure because I am in a life stage where shift is inevitable. Sure there are aspects on my life I know I need to work on, but that doesn’t mean a completely new me. I like who I am, and if I notice aspects of my life where I an improve on, I act on them gradually, with minimal pressure.

BUT with that being said, if you are looking to make changes in your life, do so without such a pressure buildup. Work towards things that you want to do for yourself, not what you think you need to do. Instead of doing something daily, try weekly. Instead of jumping the gun with an “I’m going to workout everyday” mindset, try a goal to work towards a week, specifically dropping these numerical standards. If you are doing something a number to times over and over for yourself, it will become more of a chore, as your goal starts to slide out of reach. Be mindful with your goals, as nothing comes overnight.

Going into the new year, I tend to reflect on things I have done in the past year. And 2021 was extremely impactful on my life and my future. I was fresh out of college, and took a gap semester before starting my job and my graduate program. I traveled, lived at home, started my first corporate job, moved to a new city, and began a whole new part of my life that I would have never pictured for myself if you asked me where I would have been a year ago. Through all of the chaos, I really took away one thing – balance. You know how people say water is the key to life? Well, balance is too. When I was in high school, I thought I knew everything there was to know. When I went to college, I realized how naive I was in high school, and thought about what an adult I had become now that I was in college. When I graduated college and started living on my own, I realized I was back in that same spot. Just when you think you know it all – you don’t. You have learn to balance new things every single day. For me now, that balance is juggling a social life, full time school, and a full time job. I learned the hard way on how to do this, and I have to make sacrifices for myself to better all three aspects of my life. Without finding that balance, I would have failed my first time on my own. And that is what I taking with me from 2021, and moving it into 2022.

With all of that being said, there are small things that I need to work on. And while goal setting needs to be done so tediously, and is hard work, it lies as a motivator and reminder that there is opportunity for growth. In 2022 I want to:

  • Make my bed first thing every morning
  • Get movement in every day, whether that’s a walk to get coffee, or yoga in my apartment
  • Lower my screen time, and learn to remove myself from my phone
  • Write more consistently
  • Allow myself to be more vulnerable with others
  • Eat more whole foods and make time for cooking
  • Say “yes”more – I’ve been wanting to read the book The Year Of Yes by Shonda Rhimes, and now is the perfect time to do so

New year, same me, more mindful habits.

Gifts For Him Under $50

We all know Christmas shopping can be difficult, but Christmas shopping for a guy has me running in circles. Whether it’s your dad, boyfriend, coworker, whoever – all guys seem to be tough to shop for. And if you are trying to keep the gift in a reasonable price range, it limits a lot of possibilities. If you are looking for a gift for him, look no further.

Sweatpants

Clothes can be hard to shop for as a gift, but something more loose fitting like a pair of sweatpants is always easy. A lot of guys don’t like to spend money on clothes for themselves, so being gifted them is always appreciated. I bet you whoever you’re thinking of has neutral sweats, but this forest green color will go with almost anything.

Whiskey Decanter

Not really a practical gift, but this is nice to have! A very adult gift, so if you have a brother and boyfriend moving to an apartment or house this would be a great Christmas and housewarming gift. This specific decanter is linked here on West Elm, but I have included others linked below.

Outdoor Voices Y’all Crew Socks

Socks are always wanted, but socks with the word “y’all” are always needed. This would be the perfect small gift for him or her (I want to purchase these myself). Get the link to these OV socks here.

Apple Watch Band

When in doubt, this is a nice and simple gift without the expense of getting an actual watch. This one from Nordstrom really elevates the sporty looks of an Apple Watch, which is perfect to wear to events or work.

Blue Light Glasses

Everyone needs a paid of blue light glasses now considering how often we are all on our laptops. This is perfect for someone who works from home, games, etc. Get this pack of two on Amazon.

Electric Mug Warmer

I have been wanting to get one of these for my dad as a gift for years. I just thinking they are the perfect gift for anything who doesn’t chug their coffee first thing in the morning. This warmer you can get here on Amazon (and it’s the perfect last minute gift because it comes through Prime).

Golf Ball Whiskey Chillers

This is perfect for a more recreational guy, and is a little different than the average ice mold. These are chillers, so you just pop these in the freezer and put them them in your drink. BONUS: they won’t water it down. Find these on Uncommon Goods.

Their Favorite Record

To do something a little more tailored to their taste, getting a guy their favorite record is a great gift. You can find these are a record store, or online from Urban Outfitters if you’re in a pinch. To add to this, you can also purchase a frame from Urban Outfitters with the whole gift still being under $50.

Character Device Holder

Perfect for the “gamer”, this character holder is so nerdy and so adorable at the same time. This comes in Marvel, Star Wars, and DC characters.

Champion Crewneck

I bought this for my brother last year and he still wears it all the time. It’s simple, clean, and looks good on everyone! Get this for a good price and within a few days if you order on Zappos.

Gifts For Her Under $50

While shopping is one of my favorite pastimes, I have such a hard time thinking of what to gift people for the holidays. Some people are so easy, and other are extremely difficult just depending on their personality. If you are shopping for someone where it is hard to take the “personal” approach to gifting, you may find yourself in a rut. And when you aren’t looking to spend a lot of money, things get near to impossible to find a good gift. When I am put in this position, I try to think gifts I would love to receive, and think, what is something that I wouldn’t buy for myself? Taking that into consideration, I have curated a list of gifts for her you can find under $50.

Slippers

Slippers are something that everyone loves and wants, but they just seem impractical to buy since you never wear them outside of the house. So what better way to get a pair of slippers than being gifted them? I love these from Madewell as sherpa is a staple this fall, but I have included links to others as well.

Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag

Lululemon really knew what they were doing calling this the everywhere bag, because the people that wear these wear them everywhere; workout, errands, bars – the list goes on. The green color is perfect, but if you’re not a fan check out the fifteen others.

Kosas “Take The Site Home” Kit

For the beauty lover that has everything – this is it. This is one of my all time favorite brands as I have their skin tint, concealer and bronzer. With this $35 kit, you are able to test every shade of every product from Kosas. If you find a product you like, you can use the $35 you used to purchase the kit as a gift certificate on their website. Definitely one of the coolest ideas I have seen in beauty, and it is only available on Kosas website.

Luxury Laundry Detergent

Laundry detergent is one of those things I hate to buy because it can be so expensive for no reason. SO, this would be a great gift to receive. The Le Labo detergent smells amazing, and another favorite of mine is the Glamorous Wash in the scent Diva.

Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk On The Go Kit

If you have been on any social media, you know that Charlotte Tilbury was the beauty brand of 2021 – for a good reason. The cult favorite Pillow Talk line is the perfect makeup-no-makeup for glam or day to day wear. This kit retails for $50 and consist of a mini eye pencil, mascara, lip liner and lipstick.

The Five Minute Journal

I can’t even count how many times I have talked about The Five-Minute Journal on this website, so you know this has to be worth it. This daily journal is the perfect gift for anyone no matter their age, as it practices gratitude and reminds us of the importance of each day. Highly recommend.

Nice Candles

As a very new adult, I love burning candles but I hate buying them, as buying candles I love are just not in my budget right now. This Kacey Musgraves candle is hands down my favorite candle I have had over the past year, and it has 50 hours of burn time. I have linked some of my other favorites as well, because no one is ever upset if they are gifted a candle.

Skims Mock Neck Tank

I know that it is winter, but it is never too cold to layer. I personally do not own this tank, but have heard beyond amazing things about. Skims has many affordable pieces under $50, if you if are wanting to gift a set instead of just one piece you are looking at about $60 depending on the items you select. This red color came out for the holidays and is stunning. Wearing this under a blazer with jeans and sneakers sounds right up my alley – and about half of the population’s alley too.

Fun Earrings

Buying new earrings can add up, especially if you don’t want them to turn after a few wears. Studs has the best earrings at a good price point, and they are great quality. They have so many fun earrings like these cowboy boot huggies, alphabet studs, square hoops and more.

Claw Clips

Girls basically exclusively wear their hair in claw clips now, so receiving one is always appreciated to add to the collection. Emi Jay makes the best clips, and you can find these all on Revolve.

Venus Et Fleur Le Mini

While yes, it sounds steep to pay $40 for one rose, this one rose will live all year and yes, it is real. This singular floral arrangement is the perfect gift for the person that actually has everything and is a ~material girl~

Pajama Set

Run, don’t walk, because J.Crew’s pajama sets are only $39. If you missed the sale do not worry, they are running sales all through Christmas. Thank me later!

If you have any gifts for her under $50 you would like yo recommend, please reach out and I can add them to the list (:

Happy Holidays!

WOTW: December 1

After a month break, I am back. This month is a new beginning and I am taking December to focus on good intentions with myself, and remember how grateful I am for all of the good people in my life. There is nothing like a step back that brings you two steps forward.

Starting of WOTW with a new month, seems fitting to me.
